Golf Master Tips, CSUN Women's Golf Season - Having completed her second season at the helm of the CSUN women's golf program, head coach Gina Umeck looks back on the 2014-15 season and ahead to 2015-16.

The Matadors opened the 2014-15 season in late September in Palm Desert, Calif. The first question heading into the season was how CSUN would replace departed senior Clariss Guce who reached the 2014 NCAA Championship as an individual.

"Losing Clariss to graduation was a large portion of our team scoring," said Umeck. "But we improved our ranking 30 spots from the beginning of the fall to April so that was very encouraging."

After finishing 15th in the season opening tournament in Palm Desert, the Matadors posted three consecutive top five finishes to conclude the fall portion of the schedule.

After sophomore Cesilie Hagen finished fifth to lead CSUN to a third place finish at the Fresno State Invitational, fellow sophomore Rebecca Bostrom finished fourth at Santa Clara's Colby Classic before winning medalist honors at Cal Poly's Firestone Grill Invitational in late October.

"Rebecca's win at Cal Poly and her continuous solid play was definitely a highlight for us this season," added Umeck.

Bostrom continued her solid play into the spring when she finished second at CSUN's own Matador Invitational in February. A pair of challenging tournaments followed as the Matadors were tested at Stanford's Peg Barnard Intercollegiate and Hawaii's Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational where they finished 12th and 11th respectively.

Behind Arinda Bhanaraksa's fourth place finish at Sacramento State's Invitational CSUN rebounded to post a second place team finish. Bhanaraksa then led the Matadors to a dual win over CSU Bakersfield as the junior fired an even par 72 to win the match.

"Arinda winning medalist honors with a 72 was also a highlight for us in 2014-15," said Umeck.

The Matadors concluded the season with an eighth place finish at the Big West Championship as senior Sharon Shin tied for 18th place, the best conference championship finish for the four-year letterwinner.

Shin, along with teammates Bhanaraksa and Elisabeth Haavardsholm were all named to the Big West All-Academic Team for their efforts in the classroom.

Bhanaraksa wound up leading the squad with a scoring average of 78.2 with Haavardsholm (78.4), Bostrom (78.6) and Hagen (78.8) close behind. In all, the CSUN posted five top five finishes in addition to one top 10 finish.

"We're hungry for next year," added Umeck. "We're bringing in four new effective recruits, including the reigning CIF Champion, so that shows great promise and momentum change for our program." (Latest golf news source: Go Matadors)
