50th Year Forest Hills Golf Course - The nine-hole Forest Hills Golf Course was opened in July 1965 by Gerald Knoderer, who passed away. His father Jerry Knoderer then ran the course, but was killed in a motorcycle accident just down the road.
“There are no days off. No holidays or vacations,” Chris said, stating that it’s just him and a minimal staff tending to the grounds and running the pro shop.
“There’s always something to do for daily upkeep. You have to be hands-on with everything,” he said.
Over the decades, Chris said not much on the course has changed besides a few trees being removed.
Although the course is only nine holes, Chris said the layout of the grounds make for a challenging game.
“There are a lot of people who like how the course is laid out,” Chris said. “You’re always on hilly ground.”
The golf course is also free of sand traps. Veteran golf pro Harry Flora designed the course. Chris said the site has always been a good place to learn the game of golf. He himself has been golfing on the course since he was a child and is always happy to lend some pointers to fellow golfers.
According to Chris, many of the problems people have with their game are mental. “There are all sorts of quirks in the mind,” he said.
Forest Hills Golf Course is open from April 1 through Oct. 31 each year. However, Chris said the weather can make playing tricky in the spring and fall.
“Mother Nature’s temperament can be a little annoying,” Chris said.
