Newman's First Street Miniature Golf, Fun Miniature Golf

Newman's First Street Miniature Golf Fun Miniature Golf (Golf Master Tips) - It's a nice, summer afternoon, and the kids are bored and looking for something to do. How about a round of mini-golf? While often enjoyed as a fun, leisure activity, mini-golf can be competitive, with tournaments in the United States and Europe, according to the Pro Mini Golf website.

Wisconsin Rapids is home to three mini-golf courses, each offering different obstacles and postgame treats, including ice cream.

Reuben Newman built Newman's First Street Mini-Golf in 1972. Newman died in 2010, and his son, Jim, who retired from Lincoln High School in 2010, now owns and maintains the course. The course offers obstacles that include a spinning windmill, bumper pool and, like most courses, water hazards.

Due to changing ownership, the history of White Sands Mini Golf at Lake Wazeecha is not clear, but the course may date to the 1960s. Current owner Michelle Bredl said she always wanted to own her own business, so she decided to buy it. She likes to stay challenged and busy. Throw in a job at Jacoby Custom Cues in Nekoosa, and being a mom to 18-month-old twins, a 5-year-old and 7-year-old, and it's a good guess she's met that self-imposed criteria. She is in her third season of ownership.

The third course, Clancy's, offers not just a mini-golf course, but a driving range and other recreation. Bob Ness, who bought the facility in 1999, said the course hasn't changed much since. The course is accented with green shrubs and the bright green carpet familiar to most mini courses.

Newman's First Street Miniature GolfAs children — and without knowing each other — Eben and Lacey Peck rode their bikes to Newman's First Street Miniature Golf from their respective neighborhoods in Grand Rapids and Wisconsin Rapids.

The couple met at Bowlmor while Lacey was working and Eben was bowling. Now married for almost seven years, the couple still enjoys bowling on occasion, but also enjoy some miniature golf with their children, Elyxa, 6, and Mattyx, 2. The foursome hit the links at Newman's during Eben's recent vacation from his job at HHA Sports.

"So just enjoying the day," Eben said.

The cost is family-friendly, Eben said. The couple recalled mini-golf costing them $1 when they were children; now the family golfed for $9.50.

"It's still cheap entertainment," Eben said.

The course includes water obstacles and other challenges. Eben and Lacey said the spinning windmill and bumper-pool-style holes are their biggest tests.

After a round or two of 18-hole putts, golfers often enjoy ice cream or other treat at Newman's — which is exactly what the Peck family planned to do following their visit.
