Golf Carts Legal on City Streets? (Golf Master Tips) Are golf carts allowed on city streets? I passed one recently on W.T. Weaver Boulevard with a sign on it that said golf cart rentals and a phone number. If you play golf like I do, they are. Hey, I'm not walking across the street to play my banana slice. Technically, no, but it gets complicated.

Golf Carts Legal on City Streets?

"North Carolina law defines a golf cart as a vehicle designed and manufactured for operation on a golf course for sporting or recreational purposes that is not capable of exceeding speeds of 20 mph," said Asheville Police Department spokeswoman Christina Hallingse.

State law requires that any vehicle that's intended for operation on public roads in North Carolina be registered with the Division of Motor Vehicles, and the DMV "must refuse to issue registration to a vehicle that meets the definition of a golf cart," Hallingse said.

"Essentially, golf carts may be operated on private roads, and may cross public roads, at designated locations, but carts may not generally be driven on the street because they can't be registered," Hallingse said.

"Someone could modify a golf cart so that it fit into a different vehicle definition capable of registration, but then it would no longer be a golf cart." (Golf carts article source, author and credit belong to: John Boyle)
