County Golf Championship; Laudenman Leads the Tournament - Orwigsburg’s Ryan Laudeman has one county amateur golf title on his resume. His round Saturday put him in excellent position to grab another.
Laudeman fired a 4-under 68 to take a three-shot lead in the Championship Flight after the first day of the 54th annual Schuylkill County Amateur Golf Medal-Play Championship at Hidden Valley Golf Course.
There were some low scores posted on Day 1 of the championships, with four of the golfers chasing Laudeman posting rounds of par or better.
Bailey Sophy, Pottsville, who is a senior at Blue Mountain; Misstishin, Ashland, a three-time stroke-play champ; and Steve Rice, Orwigsburg, are all three strokes back after each had rounds of 1-under 71. Greg Merrick, Pottsville, is four shots off the pace after a 72, while Bob Hillibush, Mahanoy City, and James Bromwell, Schuylkill Haven, are five back after 73s. Bromwell won this year’s county match-play championship in July.
Those are all good scores, but nobody could keep up with Laudeman, who shot a 3-under 33 on the opening nine and 1-under 35 on the back. His round Saturday included two eagles and two birdies, 12 pars and two bogeys.
Laudeman’s eagles came on par 5s. His first was at the 464-yard fifth. The second came on the second-longest hole on the course, the 527-yard 13th. His birdies were at No. 2, a 436-yard par 4, while his second came on the 207-yard, par-3 11th.
After his eagle at 13, Laudeman was 6 under for his round. He was 2-over through his final five holes, bogeying No. 14, a par 4, and No. 16, a par 5.
Laudeman will tee off for today’s final round with Rice, Misstishin and Sophy at 12:10 p.m.
