9 Tips for Playing Golf at St. Andrews Old Course
Caddies
When playing St Andrews Old Course, it is advisable to book a caddie as their wealth of knowledge of the famous old links will greatly enhance your playing experience. The correct line from the tee on the Old Course St Andrews is paramount to avoiding the treacherous bunkers and shooting a low score. Be sure to book a caddie well in advance.
Buggies
Buggies or carts are very limited on the Old Course at St Andrews. They are only available to Golfers with a permanent condition of disability and a Medical Certificate will be required. Once again it is advisable to book these well in advance.
Pull Trolleys
As there are around 45,000 rounds of golf played annually on St Andrews Old Course, to avoid wear and tear trolleys are only allowed after midday between the months of April and October. With 14 of the 18 holes having double greens, in many cases it is more of a hindrance to have a trolley due to the extra distance you may have to walk.
Your Tee Time Check In
To ensure that you are not late for the round of a lifetime, ensure that you arrive in good time and check in with the starter at least 20 minutes prior to your tee time. There is a practice putting area nearby and arriving early will also give you plenty time to take some treasured photographs.
Handicap Certificates
A current Handicap Certificate is required to play St Andrews Old Course. Handicaps for men need to be 24 or less and 36 or less for women, should be presented to the Starter when you check in for your round.
Fairway Mats
If you are playing the Old course at St Andrews between the months of November and April, remember that you will be required to play off of fairway mats in order to protect the fairways during the winter months.
Practice Area
The practice facilities for the Old Course are located at the St Andrews Links Golf Academy. The PGA qualified instructors offer a "Passport to Play" lesson for Golfers unfamiliar with how to play links golf. A free shuttle bus operates during the high season between the Links and Eden Clubhouses, The Old Pavilion (by the 1st tee of the Old Course) and the St Andrews Links Golf Academy.
Course Rangers
St Andrews Links Trust employ a team of Course Rangers to patrol the links in order to maintain the proper pace of play. This ensures that all Golfers enjoy a memorable experience. If you encounter any problems during your round, keep an eye out for a Course Ranger and they will be more than happy to help you.
On the completion of their round, Golfers can utilize the first class facilities at the Links Clubhouse and Swilken Restaurant which provides magnificent views out over The Old Course. (About writer)
