Columbia Golf Association Promotes Golfing for Girls (Golf Master Tips) - On a rainy June day at the A.L. Gustin Golf Course, Melissa Coil, director of Columbia Golf Association’s Girl’s Golf Program, commands the attention of 22 fidgeting girls from the camp’s younger group. 

With 45 girls registered, the curriculum teaches the basic etiquette, rules and skills of golf. The program began six years ago as an effort by the Ladies Professional Golf Association to recruit more female golfers.

The national ratio of men-to-women golf players, according to the National Golf Foundation. At Rock Bridge High School, Coil coaches the women’s golf team and sees about 10 girls sign up to compete every year. The men’s team typically has 20 to 25 players sign up.

The national growth in junior girl golfers ages 6–17 between 1998 and 2013, according to the National Golf Foundation. Even though women are still the smallest group nationally, junior girls are the only group growing as the rest dwindle. In Columbia, the Girl’s Golf Program’s numbers have steadily increased every year. This year, about half of the girls are new players, Coil says.

The year that Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia began allowing women to play. The belief that golf exists as an older man’s game is part of why so few girls golf, Coil says. The Girl’s Golf Program helps girls realize that the sport is accessible and a game they can play for life.
