Black Light Mini Golf - Canton Indoor Golf Center

Black Light Mini Golf - oNce a grocery store, the Canton Indoor Golf Center, which opened in 2011, is home to Glow Cove Black Light Mini Golf offering an indoor, air-conditioned getaway for patrons of all ages — from groups of school-age children celebrating a birthday to dating teenagers to seniors spending the afternoon with their grandchildren — in the heat, cold, rain or snow, all year.

The 18-hole course on the Avon-Canton line is reminiscent of a traditional mini-golf course with the brightly colored balls, shiny-green turf grass and impossibly frustrating obstacles. Anyone who has played mini golf can remember at least one instance where the par-3 put-put turned into a 7-pointer. But the obstacles inside Glow Cove are limited compared to most outdoor courses. No roaring brook or waterfalls for the balls to cross, no sand pits and no trees or bushes obstructing view.

The course consists basically of four different types of obstacles: plastic sea creatures or seashells in the way, tunnels, split levels and curves in the green. This made for noticeable repetition while winding through the second half of the course. Many of the holes were direct repeats, just different decorations as the course began with pirates and dinosaurs and became under the sea.

The Glow Cove, however, adds an obstacle — and an attraction — that outdoor venues can't quite offer: darkness. The only lights inside the venue are black lights, and when one row of those stops working, things can get tricky. The black lights are certainly entertaining as your shoelaces and white-striped T-shirt begin to glow and your body all but disappears, but mini golf proves to be even more difficult when you can't quite see the green and the hole is obscured.

Each green is outlined in glow-in-the-dark paint and many of the obstacles, including the plastic dinosaurs and sharks, also glow. But with only half the black lights on, the faint paint on the holes can be difficult to see, and with some of the decorations, like a large, decapitated sea turtle in the back of the course, ripped or broken, further obstructs your sight. There were times throughout my game where "a shot in the dark" is really the best description of my strategy.

The final hole of the course, with a steep incline leading up to the last chance to prove your prowess, is quite the challenge for the end of a relatively easy-to-stay-on-par course. Both my partner and I took more than six tries to get the ball up and over the ledge without falling off the side and off the course completely.

If hunger strikes, alongside the Glow Cove mini golf is Year Roundz Sports Bar and Grill. The restaurant is separated from the golf course by a glass wall, but it is easy to walk from one to the other, although alcohol is not allowed outside of Year Roundz.

Glow Cove's busiest season is winter, when outdoor sporting options require a full parka, hat and gloves, but if you are looking for a simple, amusing activity with a friend or two, mini golf in Canton's Glow Cove can be just that on a rainy or too-hot summer afternoon.
