Good Park Junior Golf Tournament - Owen Miklos usually fills up his summer with golf, and this week he is playing at J.E. Good Park Golf Course in Akron. Miklos dodged raindrops Thursday to card a 2-under-par 69 over 18 holes to sit atop the boys Championship Flight of the 77th annual Good Park Junior Golf Tournament. Miklos, 16, was the only boy between the ages of 13-18 to finish under par.
“I feel pretty good,” said Miklos, a Hudson resident who will be a senior next month at Cleveland St. Ignatius High School. “I started out bogey-bogey. I was 2-over on the par 5s, and normally the par 5s are where you score. I am just proud I got it back together. I got three more birdies on the front to turn in 34 and then I played solid coming in.
Miklos started on No. 1 Thursday and then rain began to fall while he was on No. 2, causing about an hour delay. Miklos finished with six birdies — on Nos. 3, 6, 8, 12, 15 and 18 — and four bogeys — on 1, 2, 14 and 17 — on the course that measured 6,648 yards.
Trevor Merril of Walsh Jesuit and Jarrod Kasunick of Canton Central Catholic are tied for second in the Championship Flight, each with a 73.
Cole Pozderac (74) is fourth and Nick Mandalari (75) is fifth. Four players are tied for sixth at 76 — Maxwell Moldovan, Patrick Steffen, Evan Ferrara and Andrew Wyss. Moldovan is 13 and will be an eighth-grader next month at Green Middle School.
“I had a couple of good holes and a couple of bad ones,” Moldovan said. “The course played long and tough, but I made a bunch of putts so I am happy with my round.”
Moldovan made birdies on Nos. 2, 14 and 15, and said that despite his age, the tournament “feels like a good challenge and I am ready to take it on.”
Joe Shushok shot a 74 in First Flight and Nicholas Hough shot a 74 in Fifth Flight. Nate Porosky, Tommy Weber, Drake Tobias and Ross Scherler each shot a 76 between First and Fourth Flights. First through Eighth Flights played over 6,262 yards.
Ebersberger cards a 71
Malia Ebersberger, 17, posted the best score Thursday in the girls 13-18 age division Championship Flight with a 71 on a course that measured 4,926 yards.
Ebersberger, who resides in Palm Desert, Calif., and is in Akron this summer visiting family, is 8 shots ahead of Shelby Lewis, the defending champion.
“I started 2-under [through six holes] before the rain delay, and after the rain delay I kind of struggled a little bit,” Ebersberger said. “I was able to hold it together and make a birdie on the last hole to shoot even.”
She made an eagle on No. 14, birdies on 9 and 2, and scored bogies on 16, 4, 5 and 8.
Lewis, a junior-to-be at Walsh Jesuit, is second after a round of 79. Madison Ardelean and Hadley Spielvogel are tied for third with rounds of 82.
Ardelean, who will be freshman this upcoming school year at North Canton Hoover High School, said the rain caused the course to play more difficult than it normally would.
“[Friday] I am going to come in focused and just do my own thing and play every hole that I can play right,” Ardelean said. “I need to clean up the basic stuff.”
Samantha Torres and Kiley Blanchaniec are tied for fifth in the Championship Flight at 83 and Lexi Breitenstine is seventh at 84.

“The round kind of went in the opposite direction than it normally does. I started to play better the further I got into the round. My tee game has really been killing me lately and I have been inconsistent with my scores, just because I can’t seem to find the fairway. Today, I hit the ball really good off the tee. I got myself into some really nice opportunities and I was able to make some putts and post a good number.”Miklos started on No. 1 Thursday and then rain began to fall while he was on No. 2, causing about an hour delay.
