American pair Scott Brown (68) and Brooks Koepka (71) are a shot back on eight under. Koepka got to 10 under at one stage but finished with a one-over 71 in swirling conditions.
Scotland's Russell Knox, who was three off the lead after the second round, shot a three-over-par 73 to finish three under for 54 holes. Owen, 43, who lives in Florida, has missed five of 12 cuts on tour so far this season.
The Tennessee event is the final tournament on the PGA Tour before theUS Open begins at Chambers Bay on Thursday.
