Pressing the button completes a circuit forcing it to generate heat out of resistance and consequently triggering a load onto the battery.
By keeping an eye on the voltage changes under this load, you come to know about the battery's status. A fully charged battery of good quality should fall approximately between 0.2v and 0.4v and should remain at that level. If the fall is above 0.5v, it might indicate a weakening or failing battery.
Therefore, a load tester is preferable for detecting a bad battery. You can check all batteries one by one with this tester to get rid of all failures.
